The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading reports claiming that one of the schoolchildren abducted during the recent incident at Ahoro-Esiele in Oriire Local Government Area died while in captivity.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Command described the report as “malicious, unfounded and entirely fabricated,” stressing that no security agency involved in the ongoing rescue operation had confirmed such a development.
According to the police, the publication was deliberately designed to incite fear, create panic among residents, and undermine ongoing efforts by security agencies to secure the release of the abducted children.
“The report is false, misleading, mischievous, and without any factual basis whatsoever. At no time has the Oyo State Police Command, nor any other recognized security agency involved in the ongoing rescue efforts, confirmed such a development,” the statement said.
The Command expressed concern that the authors of the report relied on emotional narratives, speculation, and unverified claims to manipulate public opinion and heighten anxiety among residents.
It noted that the spread of such misinformation not only falls short of responsible journalism but also serves the interests of criminal elements who seek to instill fear and uncertainty in society.
The police assured residents that security agencies remain actively engaged in efforts to resolve the situation, adding that all operations are being carried out with professionalism, diligence, and necessary confidentiality.
The Command warned that the circulation of false information at a sensitive time could jeopardize ongoing operations, cause additional trauma to affected families, and mislead the public.
Consequently, the police cautioned bloggers, social media influencers, online content creators, media organizations, and members of the public against sharing or amplifying unverified security-related information.
It urged media practitioners to uphold professionalism, responsibility, and due diligence, warning against becoming tools for the spread of misinformation and fearmongering.
The Command advised residents to disregard the report in its entirety and rely only on information released through official channels of the Nigeria Police Force and other authorized government agencies.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Oyo State Police Command pledged to continue providing the public with verified updates as developments unfold.
For emergencies, residents were advised to contact the Oyo State Call Response Center through the toll-free line 615, or reach the Oyo State Police Command Control Room on 08081768614 and 07055495413.
