The media office of former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticised former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, accusing him of misrepresenting facts and disregarding Atiku’s consistent stance against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, the former vice president’s camp described Lawal’s recent remarks as unfounded and politically motivated. The statement alleged that Lawal was attempting to rewrite history while avoiding allegations concerning his alleged involvement in efforts to influence the ADC presidential primary process.
Responding to claims that Atiku had remained silent on insecurity across the country, the media office said the former vice president had repeatedly condemned terrorist attacks, banditry and kidnappings in several states, including Benue and Plateau, while also criticising government responses to the security crisis.
The statement highlighted Atiku’s long-standing advocacy for reforms to Nigeria’s security architecture, including strengthening state-level security operations and improving cooperation between local communities and security agencies. It also noted his support for legislative measures that would empower states to better equip security outfits to complement federal efforts.
According to the media office, Atiku has also championed support programmes for victims of violence, including psychological assistance, education and economic recovery initiatives. The statement further referenced his recent proposal for the establishment of special courts to handle terrorism and banditry cases, with stiff penalties for convicted offenders.
The exchange follows recent comments by Lawal questioning Atiku’s response to insecurity and comes amid increasing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general election.
