The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed the derailment of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS), with at least four coaches reportedly capsizing during the incident on Monday.
The accident occurred along the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor, prompting an immediate emergency response from railway authorities and other relevant agencies.
In a statement issued from Lagos on Monday, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, said emergency response teams had been deployed to the scene to manage the situation and provide assistance to affected passengers.
“The corporation is closely monitoring developments and will provide a comprehensive update as more details emerge on the cause and extent of the derailment,” Opeifa stated.
While the NRC did not immediately disclose the cause of the accident or indicate whether there were casualties or injuries, reports indicate that no fewer than four coaches overturned during the derailment.
The railway corporation assured the public that efforts were underway to assess the situation and determine the full extent of the incident.
Opeifa urged members of the public to remain calm and rely only on official communication channels for verified information regarding the derailment.
The Warri–Itakpe Train Service is one of Nigeria’s busiest standard-gauge rail routes, connecting communities across Delta, Edo and Kogi states and serving thousands of passengers and businesses along the corridor.
Further details are expected as rescue operations and investigations continue.
