Several National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members were abducted on Wednesday along the Aloma-Egane Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The corps members were reportedly travelling from the NYSC orientation camp in Bayelsa State to their places of primary assignment when gunmen attacked two buses near Ogene Zaria, around the Ogene Zaria/Onicha-Igo Junction.

The Kogi State Police Command said 11 victims, including the drivers of the two buses, had been rescued following a joint security operation. The command said most of those rescued were NYSC members.

According to police spokesperson Saliu Afusat, the attackers emerged from the bush, blocked the two buses and abducted some passengers, while others escaped into the surrounding bush. Two abandoned vehicles were subsequently recovered at the scene.

The police said security operatives had launched a coordinated bush-combing operation and were deploying available operational and intelligence resources to rescue the remaining victims.

However, relatives of some of the abducted corps members have raised concerns over the fate of their loved ones, with some claiming that the victims remain in captivity.

One woman, identified as Chidimma, said in a viral video that her sister was among those abducted while travelling to Abuja before proceeding to Niger State for her place of primary assignment.

Another relative, Chisom Ede, also appealed to the NYSC, Federal Government and security agencies to urgently intervene and secure the release of the abducted corps members.

An X user also claimed that the abductors had demanded N20 million in ransom, although the claim had not been independently verified.
