NDLEA intercepts ₦5bn cannabis, codeine shipments at Apapa, Tincan, Onne ports

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted consignments of Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, and codeine-based cough syrup with a combined value of more than N5 billion at the Apapa, Tincan Island and Onne ports.

At Apapa Port in Lagos, NDLEA operatives recovered 161 parcels of Thai Loud weighing 124 kilogrammes and valued at N372 million.

The consignment, which originated from Bangkok, Thailand, was concealed inside two refrigerators and two cartons in a container.

At Onne Port in Rivers State, operatives recovered 22kg of Loud hidden in a travelling bag and three vehicles shipped in one of two watch-listed containers.

Another container was found to contain 109,600 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup weighing 16,440kg.

The NDLEA said the codeine and Loud consignments seized at Onne Port had a combined street value of N833.2 million.

At Tincan Island Port in Lagos, officers recovered 2,595 parcels of Canadian Loud weighing 1,297.5kg from a container shipped from Montreal, Canada.

The consignment was concealed inside a Toyota Sienna and a Hyundai Elantra, alongside other items in the container.

The agency valued the Tincan Island consignment at more than N3.8 billion.

Beyond the port seizures, NDLEA operatives also carried out major cannabis eradication operations across the country.

In Osun State, the agency destroyed 20,234kg of cannabis, popularly known as skunk, cultivated on 8.0936 hectares of farmland in Area 4, Ife South Local Government Area.

The operation followed the arrest of a 41-year-old suspect, Agbo Dennis, in Plateau State, where 33 bags of skunk weighing 385kg were seized.

The NDLEA said the operations were part of its ongoing efforts to disrupt the supply chains of illicit drugs entering and circulating within the country.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.), commended the officers for their efforts and directed them to sustain intelligence-driven operations against drug trafficking organisations.

He also urged personnel to maintain the agency’s balanced approach to drug control, combining arrests and seizures with preventive measures and public sensitisation.
