Atiku slams Tinubu’s ‘election-laced’ fuel discount

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government’s proposed 30-day fuel discount at NNPC stations, describing it as a temporary measure that does not address the underlying cost-of-living crisis.

In a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku accused the Tinubu administration of offering short-term relief after years of high fuel prices and economic hardship.

He argued that limiting the discount to NNPC stations, without disclosing the amount motorists would save per litre or guaranteeing that transport operators would pass the savings to passengers, raised questions about the effectiveness of the measure.

Atiku said the government’s decision to introduce the intervention was an indication that more affordable fuel was possible, contrary to its previous position on providing relief to consumers.

He reiterated his proposal for capped and budgeted production support tied to fuel refined in Nigeria, with safeguards to ensure that the benefits reach consumers while supporting domestic refining.

According to him, Nigerians need sustainable measures rather than temporary relief that expires after 30 days.

“Tinubu made life expensive. I will make life affordable again,” Atiku said.
