Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, has claimed that United States President Donald Trump supports his proposal to restore fuel subsidy in Nigeria.

Atiku, who is seeking the presidency in 2027, had pledged to reintroduce a fuel subsidy if elected.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said his proposed policy would focus on supporting domestic production and refining while reducing the burden of fuel costs on Nigerians.

He said the proposal, which he described as a “Production Subsidy,” would involve supporting local producers, increasing fuel supply, monitoring prices and ensuring that Nigerians benefit from lower pump prices.

According to Atiku, the approach is consistent with the United States’ policy of supporting strategic energy production.

He also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for opposing measures aimed at reducing the impact of fuel prices on ordinary Nigerians while allegedly providing waivers, incentives and concessions to multinational oil companies and businesses.

Atiku questioned why government intervention should be considered economically unsound when it is intended to benefit citizens.

“Support what we produce and refine here, increase supply, monitor the price and make sure Nigerians feel the benefit at the pump,” he said.
