The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has once again demonstrated its commitment to holding everyone accountable for domestic violence, regardless of status.
This was evident when the agency swiftly responded to allegations of domestic violence involving Suraj Oyewale, popularly known as @SirJarus on the microblogging app X, where he reportedly admitted to assaulting his wife, Mrs. Oyewale Ayoola.
In a now-deleted tweet, @SirJarus made self-incriminating statements, prompting the agency to issue a statement on X: “Our attention has been drawn to a tweet made by @SirJarus. As the statutory agency in Lagos State dedicated to preventing and responding to domestic and sexual violence, we take this very seriously.
Domestic violence in any form is unacceptable, and the Lagos State Government maintains a zero-tolerance stance against it. We have referred this matter to the Commissioner of Police (Gender Desk Department) to initiate an investigation. We appreciate everyone who tagged us and brought this to our attention. We remain accessible 24/7 via our toll-free line at 08000-333-333.”
The agency’s prompt action led to the Nigerian police launching an investigation into the allegations against @SirJarus, underscoring the agency’s proactive approach in addressing such cases.
This decisive response is emblematic of the comprehensive efforts spearheaded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to combat domestic violence in Lagos State. In 2021, Governor Sanwo-Olu signed into law the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Bill and the Sex Offenders Register, reinforcing the state’s commitment to preventing gender-based violence crimes.
Under the visionary leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Executive Secretary Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the agency has implemented impactful initiatives such as the “Man Wey Sabi” program, aimed at challenging gender stereotypes and promoting men’s involvement in ending domestic abuse. The agency has also conducted successful door-to-door community engagements across rural Lagos, distributing informational materials on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) reporting procedures and educating participants on their rights.
Moreover, collaborative efforts with the police, NGOs, judiciary, and other government agencies have significantly enhanced the agency’s effectiveness in combating SGBV. Partnerships with the Child Protection Network and initiatives like The Kings Club further illustrate Lagos DSVA’s holistic approach to addressing SGBV.
Social media users widely acclaim the professionalism of the Lagos DSVA response team, noting their swift and comprehensive support for survivors, including legal, medical, emergency, counseling, and psychosocial assistance.
Through these initiatives and collaborations, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, continues to set a benchmark for addressing and preventing domestic and sexual violence in Nigeria.
