The Federal Government has announced plans to establish a national call centre to receive, track and resolve electricity-related complaints from consumers across the country.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this on Wednesday during the commissioning of a three-megawatt hybrid mini-grid project, as well as a renewable energy workshop and training centre, at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja.

Tegbe said the proposed call centre would provide a central platform through which Nigerians could lodge complaints about electricity supply and have them addressed.

“My office is working on a call centre where electricity complaints across the country can be lodged and resolved,” he said.

The minister also disclosed plans for a dedicated channel through which members of the public could report vandalism of critical electricity infrastructure for immediate intervention.

According to him, the Federal Government is working with the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to tackle the vandalism of electricity assets nationwide.

Tegbe urged students and other members of the university community to help protect electricity infrastructure by reporting acts of vandalism involving solar systems, transformers, transmission towers and other power facilities.

He said the newly commissioned project would benefit 58,726 students, while 388 streetlights installed under the project would improve lighting and security across the campus.

The minister added that electrifying the university would support research, reduce dependence on diesel-powered generators and ease pressure on the institution’s operating costs.

He said the investment formed part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which, according to him, prioritises electricity infrastructure that supports public services and productive activities.

Tegbe also stressed the importance of continuity in the implementation of national power projects, saying sustained investment and completion of projects across successive phases were essential to development.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, said the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) was established to protect, monitor, maintain and optimise renewable energy infrastructure.

Aliyu said the success of renewable energy projects would depend not only on the infrastructure installed but also on how effectively they were maintained and sustained.
