Heavy flooding has submerged sections of the Benin-Ore Expressway, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded and causing severe traffic congestion along the busy highway.

The flooding, which followed hours of heavy rainfall, forced drivers to navigate the waterlogged road with extreme caution, while many vehicles remained trapped in queues stretching for several kilometres. Videos shared on social media showed floodwaters covering a significant portion of the expressway, raising concerns over accidents and vehicle breakdowns.

Some passengers were seen waiting by the roadside as frustrated travellers lamented the recurring flooding on the strategic route, which links Lagos, Ondo and other South-West states with Edo and the South-South region.

Motorists have appealed to the Federal Government and relevant authorities to urgently address the situation to prevent further disruption.

The Benin-Ore corridor is one of Nigeria’s busiest transport routes, serving as a major gateway for the movement of passengers, goods and petroleum products between the South-West, South-South and South-East.

The latest incident comes as several states, including Delta, Lagos, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Edo, continue to experience widespread flooding amid the peak of the rainy season.
