The Kano State Government has suspended the fee hike by private primary and secondary schools in the state.
The suspension was announced on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Private Schools, Baba Abubakar Umar.
“The government has suspended the fee hike by private schools with immediate effect,” Umar said.
Umar announced that the decision was taken in response to the concerns raised by parents and guardians about the high cost of education in private schools. He said the government would not allow private schools to exploit parents and guardians by hiking fees at will.
In addition, he further revealed that all certificates from private schools have been revoked and the state government has started issuing application forms for the registration of private schools.
“The state government has commenced the issuance of application forms for registration of the operations of private schools in the state, which will end on Friday, August 18th, 2023”, he noted.
He however said that the new registration is to make sure that there is an available database for monitoring and that parents have been advised against paying fee increments in any of the schools.
“The essence of the new registration is to ensure we have an accurate database for government’s policy and monitoring, to sanitise the sector. All that we are rolling out for private schools operation in the state is in line with the law established in May 2014.
“Parents should report any school that is asking them for fee increment, as that has been suspended for now. No school will be allowed to unilaterally increase school fees again,” he added.
Parents, he assured would be mandated to pay school fees at the right time.
