Lagos Police arrest influencer ‘Witch of China’ over cyberbullying

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 22-year-old social media influencer and Chinese translator, Shalom Daisy Daniels, popularly known as “Witch of China,” over allegations of cyberbullying, defamation, and coordinating online attacks against vendors and their businesses.

Daniels was arrested following complaints from several business owners who accused her of using her social media platforms to damage their reputations and encourage the mass reporting of their business accounts.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Tijani, directed that the case be transferred from the Langbasa Division in Eti-Osa to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. The probe is being handled by the SCID Cybercrime Unit under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Soledayo Akinbisehin.

According to a police source, investigations commenced after multiple complaints were received from vendors whose social media pages were allegedly taken down following coordinated online attacks.

One of the complainants, businesswoman and importer Jennifer Ojubu, alleged that her troubles began after she defended another vendor whom Daniels had criticised over the pricing of imported goods. Ojubu claimed that Daniels later targeted her business while in China by comparing her prices with those on Chinese e-commerce platforms and portraying her as dishonest.

She further alleged that Daniels encouraged people to join her importation group for a fee of N3,000, promising access to cheaper products while depicting vendors as exploitative. Ojubu said Daniels repeatedly referred to her as a thief online and used screenshots from her pre-order group to create content against her business.

According to Ojubu, coordinated reports by Daniels’ supporters led to the suspension of several of her business accounts with thousands of followers, causing major financial losses. “I am a single mother. My business pages are where I earn my livelihood. They want to bring me down,” she said.

Another complainant, Adenike Adeshina, alleged that Daniels used her videos without permission, publicly labeled her a thief, and shared her personal details online. She claimed that after demanding the removal of the videos, Daniels threatened to destroy her brand.

Adeshina further alleged that she later discovered a group linked to Daniels where the accounts of about 15 vendors were listed for mass reporting, resulting in the suspension of some business pages. She said one of her business accounts, built over eight years, was taken down, while others were restricted to prevent further attacks.

The complainants said the alleged online harassment caused significant financial losses and disrupted their businesses.

However, Daniels denied orchestrating attacks against vendors, insisting that her actions were aimed at promoting consumer protection and exposing alleged overpricing. She maintained that she never directed anyone to report or harass business owners.

Although she admitted creating a WhatsApp group after her social media accounts were suspended, Daniels denied using it to coordinate attacks, stating that she only encouraged supporters to “say hello” to vendors and not engage in harassment or report their pages.

Police sources said investigations are ongoing and that Daniels, along with any accomplices identified during the probe, will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
