The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has warned residents against the growing circulation of adulterated palm oil in markets across the state, revealing that some traders are allegedly mixing harmful substances into the product to increase profits.
The agency disclosed that contaminated palm oil may contain dangerous materials such as candle wax, chemicals, dyes, and impurities capable of causing food poisoning, liver damage, stomach disorders, and other long-term health complications.
As part of its enforcement efforts, LASCOPA sealed a shop located on Idutafa Lane off Oluwa Street, Lagos Island, for allegedly selling adulterated palm oil.
The agency urged consumers to buy only from trusted vendors and watch out for unusual colour, foul odour, excessive thickness, or suspicious sediments in palm oil before purchase.
LASCOPA also warned traders involved in the sale of unsafe products to desist immediately or face legal sanctions under Lagos consumer protection laws.
