The National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has kicked off a significant compliance initiative aimed at enhancing standards in the hospitality, travel, and tourism sectors across Lagos State. This exercise is part of NIHOTOUR’s effort to uphold its regulatory mandate, set forth under the NIHOTOUR Establishment Act 2022, which aims to standardize professional practices nationwide.
As part of this initiative, NIHOTOUR is inspecting hotels, restaurants, and various establishments to ensure that all personnel and operators are properly certified and registered. The Director of Legal Services at NIHOTOUR, Mrs. Mariam Inuwa, Esq, emphasized the importance of compliance, citing Section 5(1)(h) of the Act that empowers the Institute to oversee the activities of professionals in the sector. She also pointed to Section 4(o), which mandates certification to uphold uniform standards and quality service delivery.
Recent visits included prominent venues such as Marriott Hotel Ikeja GRA, The Sojourner, Sheraton Lagos, Radisson Blu Victoria Island, Black Diamond Hotel, and FourPoints By Sheraton. These visits were conducted after the issuance of letters of demand and contravention notices to the establishments involved.
In a positive turn, Marriott Hotel, The Sojourner, Radisson Blu, Black Diamond, and FourPoints by Sheraton have begun their registration and certification processes in response to NIHOTOUR’s regulatory expectations.
This compliance initiative is part of NIHOTOUR’s broader commitment to enhancing the Nigerian hospitality, travel, and tourism sectors as integral components of national development, aligned with the ongoing Renewed Hope Agenda. The Institute aims to continue constructive engagement with stakeholders to ensure compliance with the laws governing the industry.
