In a heartfelt statement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed profound sorrow at the passing of Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, a former academic and Governor of Kwara State, who died at the age of 84.
Tinubu’s tribute highlighted Adebayo’s unwavering commitment to public service and progressive politics throughout his distinguished lifetime. Described affectionately as “C.O.” by his political associates, Adebayo was recognized as a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.
As a Senator during the Second Republic, Adebayo was a leading advocate for the Unity Party of Nigeria, which was headed by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. His political prowess was evident in the 1983 general elections when he emerged as the second elected civilian governor of the old Kwara State, achieving a notable electoral upset.
During the challenging years of military dictatorship that followed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, Adebayo stood firmly for democracy and the values of justice, fairness, and equity. His dedication to these principles led him to spend several years in exile in Canada, a time that tested his resilience and commitment. Upon his return, he reentered the political arena in Nigeria’s 4th Republic.
President Tinubu remarked on their collaboration during the years in exile, commending Adebayo’s courage, integrity, and perseverance during turbulent times. Adebayo was also recognized for his pivotal role in the Pan-Yoruba group Afenifere, where he provided a stabilizing influence and was a voice of reason.
Adebayo served as the Minister of Communications and Transportation from 2003 to 2007 and is remembered for his patriotism and dedication to the advancement of Kwara State and the Yoruba people.
In his statement, President Tinubu extended condolences to Adebayo’s immediate family, political associates, the government, and the people of Kwara State, urging them to find solace in the legacy of impeccable service left by the late politician.
The tribute was issued on June 25, 2025.
