Tunisia sack coach Lamouchi after World Cup humiliation

Tunisia have parted ways with head coach Sabri Lamouchi following the team’s crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision was announced less than 24 hours after the heavy loss, with the Tunisian Football Federation opting to make an immediate change as the Carthage Eagles seek to revive their campaign.

Former Tunisia international Wahbi Kazri, who is currently part of the national team’s technical crew, is expected to take charge on an interim basis for the remainder of the tournament.

Lamouchi was appointed head coach in January 2026 and endured a difficult spell in charge of the North African side. His first match ended in a goalless draw against Canada, raising hopes of a positive start.

However, Tunisia’s performances subsequently declined, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Austria before being thrashed 5-0 by Belgium. The disappointing run culminated in Sunday’s 5-1 humiliation against Sweden, prompting football authorities to act.

The Carthage Eagles now face a must-win encounter against Japan on June 21 as they attempt to salvage their World Cup campaign under new leadership.

Tunisia’s federation will hope that the coaching change provides the spark needed to improve results and restore confidence within the squad as the tournament progresses.
