A civil rights lawyer, Ben Crump based in Florida has explained how a 35-year-old black woman was shot dead by her 55 year-old white neighbor on Friday evening as she made to retrieve her kids iPad.
Ajike “AJ” Owens, Crump said in a Twitter post on Monday was killed by her neighbour unjustly and to put salt to injury, the white woman has neither been arrested not charged.
But the community police head said the shooting appeared to have happened after a backlog of heated arguments between the neighbours, as police had been summoned to the housing project for about “six to eight times” before the fatal shooting.
According to eyewitnesses, trouble started after a number of kids were playing in front of the house. The white woman who didn’t like it came out of her apartment, threw something at the kids and as they ran away from her, they forgot to pick their iPad. The woman took it and went back to her apartment.
Few minutes later, Owen appeared and banged on the white woman’s door to return her children’s iPad. There was a lot of banging and shouting and before anyone knew it, the white woman shot Owens through the door.
The police boss, Billy Woods, who has not revealed personal information about the shooter said investigation was still going on and asked residents to be calm and go about their various businesses.
“I wish our shooter would have called us instead of taking actions into her own hands. I wish Ms. Owens would have called us in the hopes we could have never gotten to the point at which we are here today”, the police boss stated
However, Owen’s mother Pamela Diaz said she wants justice as her daughter was not the aggressor
“My daughter, my grandchildren’s mother, was shot and killed with her 9-year-old son standing next to her. She had no weapon. She posed no imminent threat to anyone,” she cried.
