A passenger was arrested on Wednesday, for allegedly stealing a laptop from another passenger’s bag on board an Ibom Air flight from Lagos to Abuja.
In a statement made available by the airline’s spokesperson and General Manager, Marketing and Communication, Aniekan Essienette, the suspect, Ogeneochuko David, was apprehended after the owner of the laptop noticed that it was missing and notified the crew members. A search was conducted, and the laptop was found in David’s possession.
David was subsequently deplaned and handed over to the Federal Airport Authority (FAAN), Aviation Security (AVSEC) who then handed him over to the police for further investigation. He is currently facing charges of theft.
The police said it has confirmed that the suspect is a member of a large syndicate who specialize in stealing onboard aircraft.
Essienette further revealed that the owner of the laptop voluntarily elected to step down from the flight to assist the police to seeing the case to a logical conclusion.
Ibom Air also condemned the incident and said that it has zero tolerance for theft on its flights. The airline urged passengers to report any suspicious activity to the crew members immediately.
Recall that this is not the first time that a passenger has been arrested for stealing on an Ibom Air flight. In May, another passenger was arrested for stealing N100,000 from a wallet in the overhead bin.
