The price of cooking gas is set to rise again next week, according to the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM).

The association’s president, Olatunbosun Oladapo, said the price hike is due to a number of factors, including rising international prices, high tax rates and prices of vessels, forex scarcity, and naira devaluation.

“It is starting next week because international prices have gone up,” Oladapo said.

The price of a 12.5kg cylinder of gas is currently between N8,200 and N9,000, but it could go up to N12,500 next week, the association informed.

He urged the government to intervene to prevent the price of cooking gas from rising too high. “The government should reduce taxes on cooking gas and make it easier for marketers to import it,” he said.

The price of cooking gas has been rising steadily in recent months, putting a strain on household budgets. The increase is also having a knock-on effect on the cost of other goods and services, as businesses pass on the higher costs to consumers.

“The situation is very unfortunate because prices are going higher. Nigerian consumers are passing through very difficult times because they can no longer afford gas,” he added.
The government has said it is aware of the problem and is working to address it. However, it is unclear when the price of cooking gas will come down.

In the meantime, consumers are advised to conserve gas and to shop around for the best prices. They can also try to switch to alternative sources.
