The family of Joy Amadi, has been thrown into mourning, following the death of the 34-year-old teacher, who was smashed to death by their neighbour’s overhead tank.
Mrs Beatrice Amadi, the mother of the deceased while speaking to newsmen on Friday said the incident happened at their residence, located at Enagbare Street, off Lucky Street, in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo state on August 4.
The grieving mother said her daughter who had just recently completed her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was inside her room, helping her peel melon, when the tank erected in a neighbour’s new building collapsed, penetrating the roofing sheet and crushing her to death.
She said her daughter who after her NYSC started working in a private school did not go to work that day because she had free periods that day, and decided to stay at home and help her with house chores.
Mrs Amadi described her late daughter as a kind, humble and hardworking lady, who was very beneficial to the family and was responsibile for paying their house rent.
She said Joy’s father was at work when the unfortunate incident happened but had to rush back home after receiving the news, adding that the demise of their daughter, has left a vacuum that can never be filled.
Describing how devastated she and her husband are by the incident, she said in tears: “I will miss a lot about her. It will be difficult to live without my daughter.”
A resident in the area who spoke on condition of anonymity said the owner of building where the water tank was erected is based abroad but contracted the building project to an engineer.
He blamed the engineer for Joy’s death, and as he explained that the building is sub standard and built with inferior and insufficient materials.
Lamenting, he said: “Because the owner of the building is not around to supervise the job, the engineer in a bid to save cost and make more profit, used inferior and insufficient materials.
“Unfortunately, his greed has caused someone life and thrown a family into mourning.”
The deceased’s father, who was not in the mood to say much confirmed the arrest of the site engineer, adding that the remains of his daughter has been deposited in a mortuary.
