Fresh controversy has erupted online after presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga called for legal action against social media critic Martins Otse, publicly known as VeryDarkMan over the circulation of an alleged fake audio linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The drama began after a viral voice note surfaced online, allegedly suggesting that Tinubu once asked former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to step down for him during the 2023 election period.
Reacting to the trending audio, an X user identified as Aneex questioned why many Nigerians believed the voice recording was authentic, describing it as “cheap propaganda.” The user also accused VDM of exploiting emotions online to push misinformation.
Bayo Onanuga later reposted the statement and strongly condemned the circulation of the audio. According to him, VDM should “face the weight of the law” for allegedly spreading fake content about the president, adding that it was “an egregious abuse of the social media platform.”
The alleged recording has since sparked massive debate across social media, with Nigerians divided over its authenticity. While some users believe the audio may have been manipulated or AI-generated, others insist there should be proper verification before any legal action is taken.
