Abdulsalami warns against fake news, politicisation of insecurity

Former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has warned that political propaganda and the spread of fake news on social media are fueling terrorism and worsening insecurity across Nigeria.

In a statement marking his 84th birthday, Abdulsalami expressed concern over the country’s security challenges, describing the recent death of retired General Rabe Abubakar in bandits’ captivity as a painful reminder of the threat posed by criminal groups.

He acknowledged the efforts of the armed forces and other security agencies in combating terrorism but stressed that defeating insecurity requires the collective participation of all Nigerians.

According to him, the growing politicisation of security issues has complicated efforts to address the crisis. He noted that misleading narratives and false information circulated on social media often embolden terrorists and other criminal elements.

“Propaganda for political and other selfish gains is giving oxygen to terrorist groups, while fake news continues to encourage criminal activities,” he said.

The former military leader urged citizens to support government and security agencies by remaining vigilant, law-abiding, and united against all forms of terrorism and violence.

He also called on the government to sustain decisive actions against insecurity and encouraged security agencies not to relent in their efforts to restore peace across the country.

Background

Abdulsalami, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1998 to 1999, oversaw the country’s transition from military rule to democratic governance, culminating in the inauguration of the Fourth Republic on May 29, 1999.
