A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Dumebi Kachikwu has dissolved the National Working Committee (NWC) headed by former Senate President during a special convention held in Abuja on Sunday.
The motion for the dissolution was moved by Benue State ADC Chairman, Allias Adiku, and seconded by the Zamfara State Chairman, Kabiru Garuba. Delegates at the convention adopted the decision through a voice vote.
Following the dissolution, the convention elected Abdulkadir Bashir as the party’s new National Chairman for a four-year term. Other officials elected include Johnny Derek as Deputy National Chairman, Kennedy Odion as National Secretary, and Kingsley Ogah as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
The convention also approved the adoption of the ADC’s amended 2018 constitution as the party’s guiding framework.
In his acceptance speech, Bashir called for unity, fairness and inclusive leadership, urging members to work together to rebuild and strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
The Katsina-born politician said the ADC remained committed to constitutional democracy, transparency and accountability, while blaming the party’s past internal crisis on selfish interests and attempts to monopolise the party structure.
Bashir noted that ADC remained a strong opposition platform capable of challenging the ruling party and appealed to aggrieved members to return and contribute to the party’s growth.
He also praised the party’s performance in the 2023 general elections despite internal disputes that affected its operations in several states.
“We fought through lawful processes and reclaimed the party structure for members committed to democratic accountability and responsible leadership,” Bashir said.
He urged members to remain loyal and united in order to reposition the party and promote responsible governance in Nigeria.
