Not a few fans around the world felt slighted in the last edition of the Oscars awards after legendary actress, Angela Bassett was again sidelined for an Oscar after she was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.
However, on Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences announced that the Back Phanther actress who had featured in many iconic roles will be receiving an honorary Oscar. This is coming 30 years after she was first nominated.
In 1993, she was nominated in the Best Actress category for her exceptional portrayal of Tina Turner in the movie, ” What’s Love Got to Do With It”. This year, she got another nod for the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Black Phanther: Wakanda Forever but lost.
Janet Yang, the Academy President said Bassett had given “transcendent performances that set new standards in acting”.
Meanwhile, Bassett’s fans are not too thrilled with the honour as they claim it sounds more patronising. They said that they would have been happier if she had won the Oscar competitively. Some have even urged her not to accept the award which they describe as a “consolation prize”.
“She’s your favorite actor’s favorite actor, for crying out loud… She deserves more than an honorary anything. She deserves the real thing. She’s earned the real thing,” a fan fumed.
A Journalist, Jerome Trammel said the honorary Oscar was “insulting”. On Twitter, he wrote: “They’re trying to clean up the fact that racism runs deep in that show’s process. Calling it honorary leaves a stain that she didn’t get it by ‘their’ standards.”
In addition, comedy Legend, Mel Brooks would also be receiving an honorary Oscar. The 96 years old Writer and Director also edited the movie, “ET”.
For Bassett, only time will tell if she would accept or decline the honour.
