Aliko Dangote, chairman of the Dangote Group, has been named the only Nigerian on the TIME Magazine list of the 100 most influential people in the world for 2026.
This marks his second appearance on the prestigious TIME100 list, having first been featured in 2014, when Bill Gates wrote his profile.
The annual list highlights global figures shaping key sectors such as business, politics, technology, culture, and religion. Other notable names this year include Donald Trump, Xi Jinping, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Mark Carney.
Dangote was recognised in the “Titans and Innovators” category for his impact on industrial development in Africa, particularly through ventures in cement, sugar, and oil refining.
In a tribute published by TIME, Tony Elumelu praised Dangote as resilient and forward-thinking, describing him as one of Africa’s greatest entrepreneurs. He highlighted the Dangote Refinery as a landmark achievement and a major step toward Nigeria’s industrial growth.
Elumelu added that Dangote’s success continues to inspire a new generation of African entrepreneurs, noting his commitment to building value locally and driving development across the continent.
According to TIME editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs, the TIME100 list is not based on a single measure of influence but reflects individuals shaping global conversations and driving change across industries.
He explained that selections are made through input from the magazine’s editors, reporters, and global contributors, with a focus on people influencing the future in areas such as technology, climate, health, and innovation.
