Dangote unveils $10bn plan to transform Africa’s power sector

President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, says the conglomerate plans to invest more than $10 billion in Africa’s power sector over the next three to four years.

Dangote disclosed this in an interview with Al Jazeera, saying reliable electricity is critical to driving industrialisation and economic growth across the continent.

He said the group could redirect funds earmarked for some proposed ventures, including steel, into power projects.

“We want to invest over $10 billion alone in power,” Dangote said.

He noted that more than 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity, describing the situation as a major obstacle to the continent’s development.

According to him, expanding reliable electricity supply would boost industrial activity, attract investment and support broader economic growth.

“Power is key. We will never, ever create growth without power,” he said.

Dangote also linked reliable electricity supply to government performance, arguing that politicians who deliver adequate power may have less difficulty convincing voters of their achievements during elections.

He said the proposed investment reflects Dangote Group’s intention to deepen its involvement in Africa’s energy infrastructure as the continent continues to face significant electricity shortages.
