Five killed, 10 injured as building under construction collapses in Abuja

A three-storey building under construction collapsed on Saturday morning in the Durumi 3 area near Gudu Market in Abuja, leaving at least five people dead and 10 others injured.

According to Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, rescue teams recovered one survivor alive after the victim spent more than nine hours trapped beneath the rubble.

The victims are believed to be construction workers who were on site when the structure gave way. Emergency responders continued search-and-rescue operations amid fears that more people could still be trapped.

Olayinka said the FCT Minister directed that all injured victims receive free medical treatment. Officials of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat were present at the scene to coordinate medical support.

Earlier, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that rescue teams were immediately deployed following a distress alert. Agencies involved in the operation include the Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, NSCDC, Police, FRSC and FEMA.

The injured victims have been evacuated to Asokoro General Hospital for treatment while rescue efforts continue.
