Group rejects transfer of Tinubu credentials case

The Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA) has criticised the decision of the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to transfer its suit challenging President Bola Tinubu’s academic credentials from Kano to Abuja.

CFRPA filed the suit in Kano on June 26, 2026, raising constitutional questions over the credentials presented by Tinubu under Sections 131 and 137(1)(j) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

The organisation said the transfer followed an application by Tinubu’s lawyers and expressed concern over the speed and manner in which it was granted, alleging that it could create an impression of preferential treatment.

In a statement, CFRPA’s Head of Legal Unit, Kalu Kalu Agu, said moving the case to Abuja would impose additional costs and inconvenience on the plaintiff, witnesses and members who reside in Kano.

The group also alleged that the transfer could amount to forum shopping and urged the Chief Judge to reverse the order and allow the matter to proceed in Kano.

CFRPA said the judiciary must not only be impartial but must also be seen to be impartial, adding that it would use lawful means to oppose any action capable of undermining the course of justice.

The organisation further questioned why Tinubu would be reluctant to defend the allegations in Kano if there was nothing to hide, while reaffirming its commitment to constitutionalism, accountability and the rule of law.
