The Inspector-General of Police (IGP),Tunji Disu, has directed all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to desist from unauthorised social media activities capable of undermining the integrity, professionalism and public image of the Force.
The directive, issued on Tuesday, follows growing concerns over the increasing trend of police officers creating and sharing videos, conducting live sessions and engaging in other social media activities while in uniform or in circumstances that clearly identify them as members of the Nigeria Police Force without official authorisation.
According to a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, the IGP stressed that although social media remains an important platform for communication and public engagement, its use by serving police personnel must strictly comply with existing laws, regulations and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
He noted that officers are prohibited from creating or disseminating unauthorised content while in police uniform, publicly commenting on official police matters without approval, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police officers for personal promotion, entertainment or commercial purposes.
To ensure strict compliance, the IGP directed Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders and other supervisory officers across the country to immediately sensitise personnel under their commands and enforce adherence to the directive.
The police chief further warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to take appropriate disciplinary measures against erring personnel within their jurisdictions.
As part of efforts to enforce the directive, the IGP ordered the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department, popularly known as the X-Squad, to intensify monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers engaged in activities that fall short of the professional standards expected of members of the Force.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to discipline, professionalism and responsible public communication, assuring Nigerians of its continued dedication to maintaining public trust and strengthening institutional integrity.
