Obi picks NDC presidential ticket, unveils agenda

Former Anambra State governor and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially accepted the Nigerian Democratic Coalition (NDC) presidential ticket for the 2027 election, unveiling a broad policy agenda focused on security, economic recovery, healthcare, education, and governance reforms.

Speaking at the party’s convention in Abuja on Saturday, Obi expressed gratitude to party leaders, supporters, and Nigerians for their confidence in his leadership, describing his candidacy as a mission to restore hope and rebuild the nation.

He said Nigeria is facing a defining moment marked by worsening insecurity, poverty, unemployment, and declining public trust in government. According to him, national unity and inclusive governance will be at the heart of his administration, with a commitment to bridging ethnic, religious, and regional divides.

On security, Obi pledged to strengthen intelligence gathering, deploy modern technology, and provide greater support for security agencies while addressing underlying drivers of crime such as poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion.

He also promised reforms in the healthcare sector, including expanding health insurance coverage, increasing public health spending, and revitalising primary healthcare centres nationwide.

Highlighting education as a key pillar of development, Obi said his administration would invest heavily in schools, teachers, vocational training, and technology to equip young Nigerians with relevant skills for employment and entrepreneurship.

The NDC candidate identified agriculture as a major engine for economic growth and food security, promising large-scale investments to boost production and reduce hunger across the country.

In the energy sector, he pledged to increase electricity generation and distribution by at least 10,000 megawatts within four years, arguing that stable power supply is essential for industrialisation and job creation.

Obi further promised to reduce the cost of governance, promote transparency and accountability in public finance, strengthen democratic institutions, and uphold the rule of law.

“Under my leadership, democracy will be pursued with integrity, fairness and transparency,” he said, assuring Nigerians that opposition voices would be respected and democratic principles protected.
