Okonkwo to Obi: Threatening lawsuit unwise — I may reveal confidential details

Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has cautioned Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against proceeding with a defamation lawsuit, warning that such legal action could lead to the exposure of confidential information.

Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign council, made the remarks in a series of posts on X on Tuesday while reacting to reports that Obi had demanded ₦5 billion in damages over alleged defamatory statements.

Obi had reportedly threatened legal action against Okonkwo following claims made by the ADC chieftain during a televised interview on Channels Television, where he alleged irregularities involving ticket sales and financial dealings within the party structure during the election period. The allegations were later denied by an aspirant mentioned in the dispute.

In his response, Okonkwo described the move to sue a former campaign spokesperson as “very unwise,” insisting that he was in possession of sensitive information obtained during his time in the campaign.

He further warned that he might be compelled to disclose such confidential details if the matter proceeds to court, stating that his restraint so far was based on personal ethics rather than lack of information.

Okonkwo also published screenshots of alleged WhatsApp exchanges in support of his claims and maintained that he was prepared to defend his statements if the case is pursued legally.

He added that rather than resorting to litigation, Obi could have privately sought support for future political campaigns, while insisting he was willing to assist if approached appropriately.

The former campaign spokesperson challenged Obi and his legal team to proceed with the lawsuit, saying he was prepared to respond fully once served with the court documents.
