Police foil kidnap plot in Lagos, kill four suspects

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command Special Squad have foiled an attempted kidnapping of a businessman in the Ejigbo area of Lagos, killing four suspected members of the gang during a gun battle.

The operation took place around Jakande Estate Gate on Sunday night, May 24, 2026, and led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, another firearm, live ammunition and vehicles allegedly used by the suspects.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, said the operation was carried out following credible intelligence gathered by the command about a planned abduction.

According to the police boss, operatives closely monitored the gang after receiving information that the suspects, known for targeting wealthy businessmen, had arrived in Lagos to carry out the operation.

Tijani disclosed that the gang was allegedly led by a suspect identified as Ifeanyi, also known as “Ifeko,” who reportedly operates from abroad but came into Lagos to coordinate the planned kidnapping.

The commissioner further alleged that Ifeko was the man who trained Henry Asoona, the suspected leader of a notorious billionaire kidnapping syndicate neutralised by police at the Ladipo International Spare Parts Market in 2024.

He explained that police operatives swiftly moved to the scene after confirming the gang’s movements, adding that the suspects opened fire immediately they sighted the officers.

The operatives responded with what the police described as superior firepower, leading to the killing of four gang members, while another suspect reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.

Police said investigations and efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspect are ongoing.
