Police vow justice over fatal shooting in Delta

The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, assuring the public that justice will be served.

The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, involved operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command who had responded to intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway. The information led to the apprehension of a suspect by members of a transport union, who reportedly caught him attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

According to preliminary findings, while officers were attempting to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of police regulations, resulting in the suspect’s death.

In response, the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has ordered the immediate transfer of ASP Usman and his team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. They are to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary action and possible prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterated the Force’s commitment to upholding justice and accountability. He also urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations and disciplinary procedures continue.

The police emphasized their zero-tolerance policy for extra-judicial killings, abuse of authority, and any actions that erode public trust.
