Presidency broker Ijaw, Itsekiri power-sharing deal on Warri Constituency

The Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic nationalities have reached a power-sharing agreement on the proposed Warri Federal Constituency II following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in the dispute arising from INEC’s ward delineation exercise.

The agreement was sealed on Friday at a high-level meeting chaired by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and attended by representatives of both ethnic groups, as well as senior government officials, including the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi.

Under the arrangement, the House of Representatives seat for the proposed constituency will rotate between the two ethnic groups. The Ijaw nationality will occupy the seat for the first two consecutive terms, after which it will rotate to the Itsekiri nationality for the next two terms.

The deal followed President Tinubu’s meeting with Delta State stakeholders at the Presidential Villa on Thursday, June 11, during which he directed that representatives of the ethnic groups involved in the dispute meet under Ribadu’s supervision to develop a mutually acceptable political framework.

Former Deputy Governor of Delta State, Kingsley Otuaro, and Dr. Eric Omare signed the agreement on behalf of the Ijaw nationality, while Sir A.S. Mene and Chief Robinson Ariyo represented the Itsekiri delegation.

Ribadu endorsed the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government, while Olorogun Victor Okumagba and Chief Westham Adehor signed as witnesses.
