Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Sen. Ede Dafinone, and former Delta State Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Patrick Ukah, were among the 482 passengers aboard the ill-fated Warri–Itakpe train that derailed on Monday, resulting in the death of four people.
According to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Mr. Funsho Adebiyi, the accident occurred near Agbor in Delta State and involved the capsizing of four coaches and the derailment of one.
Preliminary reports confirmed that four passengers lost their lives in the incident, including two adult females, one adult male, and one infant. In addition, about 24 passengers sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment in medical facilities in Agbor.
The train had a total of 482 people on board, comprising 442 passengers and 40 crew members, security personnel, and service providers.
Emergency response teams—including the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), the Delta State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Civil Defence Corps—were quickly deployed to carry out rescue and evacuation operations, which were completed later the same day.
Officials confirmed that injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals, while efforts are ongoing to properly identify all affected passengers, including the deceased.
The Federal Ministry of Transport and the NRC expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that a full investigation has commenced to determine the cause of the derailment.
Authorities also confirmed that the full passenger manifest has been recovered and will be made available to relevant agencies upon request.
