A baby girl with 26 fingers and toes instead of 20, a rare genetic condition known as polydactyly has been born in India.
The baby was born at a hospital in Bharatpur, in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan. She has seven fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot.
Medical experts say that polydactyly is caused by a mutation in the genes that control the development of fingers and toes and that it is a relatively common condition, affecting about 1 in every 500 babies. However they stated that having 26 digits is extremely rare.
Interestingly, the baby’s family is overjoyed with her arrival and believes that she is a divine blessing. They have named her Akshata, which means “blessed” in Sanskrit.
Akshata’s parents have said that they will take her to see a doctor to discuss the options for removing the extra digits. However, they have also said that they are happy with her just the way she is.
The birth of Akshata has sparked a lot of interest and discussion in India. Some people believe that she is a reincarnation of a Hindu goddess, while others believe that she is simply a miracle.
Meanwhile, her parents told journalists that Akshata is a healthy baby girl who is loved by her family and community.
