Stakeholders lament as Lagos cracks down on environmental offences at markets

Industry watchers have described the closure of Alaba International Market as a wake-up call for other markets and public places in Lagos state to ensure that they adhere to proper waste disposal practices and maintain a clean environment.

This is coming after the Lagos State Government shut down the popular market, along with other markets in the Trade Fair area, due to environmental offences.

The closure was announced on Monday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat, who cited poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay waste bills, and gross environmental sanitation offences as reasons for the closure.

Expectedly, the closure of the market has caused a lot of inconveniences to traders and customers who rely on the market for their livelihood and daily needs. The Alaba International Market is the largest electronics markets in West Africa, and its closure is expected to have a significant impact on the economy.

The Lagos State Government has been cracking down on environmental offences in recent times, with the closure of markets and other public places that fail to adhere to proper waste disposal practices. The government has also been encouraging residents to take responsibility for their environment and to report any environmental offences they witness.
