Troops dismantle IPOB camp in Imo, recover suspected remains of slain soldiers

Troops of the Nigerian Army have dismantled a suspected camp belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an operation in Imo State.

The operation, carried out on April 24, 2026, along the Ubaha-Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area, was conducted by troops of the 82 Division in collaboration with other security agencies. It followed intelligence reports on the location of the camp and was part of ongoing efforts to clear criminal hideouts in the South-East.

According to military sources, the troops encountered resistance as they advanced toward the suspected hideout, coming under heavy attack from armed fighters. The soldiers, however, repelled the assaults and forced the attackers to retreat.

The mission was also aimed at locating the remains of two army personnel — Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew — who were abducted and killed in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.

Following the clearance of the camp, troops conducted a search of the area and discovered shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The remains were subsequently recovered.

Military authorities said the remains have been secured for forensic examination, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities. Efforts are also underway to engage with the families of the deceased to facilitate proper identification and burial arrangements.

The Army said the operation highlights its ongoing efforts to degrade criminal networks in the region and ensure justice for fallen personnel.

It also reassured the public of its commitment to restoring peace and security, urging residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
