The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced plans for First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB), the country’s largest bank, to establish operations in Lagos, while Etihad Airways is set to begin flights to Abuja later this year.

The disclosure was made by Salem Saeed Al-Shamsi, UAE Ambassador to Nigeria, during a meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, in Abuja.

Al-Shamsi also revealed that visa restrictions on Nigerian travellers have been significantly relaxed, stating that visa applications from Nigerians are no longer being rejected.

According to the envoy, the easing of travel requirements has led to increased movement between both countries, with over 15,000 Nigerians visiting the UAE in the past year.

He further highlighted the growing economic ties between Nigeria and the UAE, noting that non-oil trade rose from $4.3 billion in 2024 to $5 billion in 2025. He projected that trade volume could reach approximately $8 billion by 2027.

The ambassador reaffirmed the UAE’s support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and security challenges, stressing that his country has consistently condemned terrorist attacks in Nigeria.

In her remarks, Odumegwu-Ojukwu welcomed the strengthening relationship between both nations, stating that many of the issues previously affecting bilateral ties, particularly visa-related concerns, had been resolved within the past year.

She commended the increase in non-oil trade and reiterated the Nigerian government’s commitment to attracting investments from UAE sovereign wealth funds and private-sector investors through an improved business environment.

The minister also identified the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed by both countries as a key driver of future trade, investment, and professional exchanges.

The meeting also served as an opportunity for Al-Shamsi to deliver a congratulatory message from Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, on Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s appointment.

She described the gesture as a reflection of the strong and growing relationship between Nigeria and the UAE.
