Wike orders cleanup of Jabi lake ‘shanties,’ rejects public outcry

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has directed authorities to clamp down on abandoned and poorly developed areas surrounding Jabi Lake, describing the proliferation of makeshift structures as an eyesore unworthy of Nigeria’s capital.

The move follows a viral video in which a popular cleric urged the minister to preserve the lake as a public relaxation spot, warning against developments that could restrict access. The appeal triggered widespread reactions online, with many expressing concern over possible commercialisation of the area.

Speaking during a media chat in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike dismissed the sentiments as emotional, stressing that the administration’s actions are guided by existing laws and the Abuja master plan.

He noted that parcels of land around the lake, initially allocated for premium projects, had remained undeveloped for years and were now occupied by shanties.

“Developers promised world-class facilities similar to what you find in Dubai, but instead we see makeshift structures. That is unacceptable,” he said.

Wike revealed that some of the affected plots had already been revoked, warning that the Federal Capital Territory Administration would no longer tolerate land speculation or prolonged inactivity on prime property.

According to him, all landowners are required to develop their allocations within a specified timeframe or risk forfeiture.

Clarifying concerns about public access, the minister insisted that the exercise is not intended to dispossess residents but to restore order and ensure proper use of the area.

“We are not taking the lake away from the people. We are reclaiming land from those who failed to meet their obligations or misused it,” he said.

He also criticised the unauthorised conversion of designated spaces, citing an instance where land meant for recreation was turned into a place of worship.

Wike reaffirmed that the government’s objective is to upgrade the Jabi Lake environment to global standards while preserving its status as a shared public asset.
