‘You’re looking for campaign funds’ — Okonkwo reacts to Obi’s ₦5bn defamation suit

Former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo has reacted to reports that Peter Obi is demanding ₦5 billion in damages over alleged defamatory remarks, saying the former presidential candidate should seek campaign support directly rather than resort to legal action.

In a statement shared on his X account, Okonkwo said he had been informed of a letter allegedly sent by Obi and his lawyers but had yet to formally review its contents.

Mocking the reported demand, he suggested that if Obi was in need of funds for future political campaigns, he should make a personal request instead of pursuing what he described as an attempt to extort money through litigation.

Okonkwo also revealed that during the 2023 presidential campaign, he personally covered expenses incurred while serving as Obi’s spokesperson, including flight tickets and hotel accommodation for campaign engagements.

The actor-turned-politician further warned that should the matter proceed to court, he may be compelled to disclose information obtained during his time as Obi’s spokesperson—details he said he had withheld out of conscience and principle.

He maintained that Obi’s legal team would have to take responsibility for any revelations that emerge from the legal process.

Describing the move as unwise, Okonkwo argued that suing a former spokesperson for defamation was a poor decision and challenged Obi and his lawyers to follow through with the threatened court action.

He added that he would issue a formal response after carefully reviewing the contents of the letter.

The development marks another chapter in the growing feud between Obi and Okonkwo, whose political alliance during the 2023 presidential election has since given way to a series of public disagreements and exchanges.
