A horse rider, Muhammed Mustapha is being held by Police in Jigawa state for killing a 70-year-old cyclist, Umar Hassan.
Mustapha who had been riding a horse, it was alleged by police, trampled on Hassan until he gave up the ghost.
Lawan Shiisu Adam (DSP), the Jijawa State Police Command’s spokesperson said the unfortunate event which occurred on Monday at Ringim Local Government Area of the State happened while Mustapha was riding a horse without proper authorization.
According to him, while he galloped along, he suddenly lost control of the animal and in the process, trampled on Hassan, a resident of Galadanchi quarters, at Tsigi Quarters in Ringim LGA, who had no idea about the impending accident.
The 70-year-old man sustained various degrees of injuries and fractures on his left leg and shoulder, thereafter.
“A team of policemen promptly besieged the scene and rushed the victim to Ringim General Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment,” the statement said.
The remains of the victim have since been handed over to the relatives for burial, while the suspect was arrested and is currently detained in police custody.
The spokesperson further said that Mustapha would be charged to court in due time, just as the remains of Hassan has been handed over to the family members.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Effiom Emmanuel Ekot however asked parents to caution their children and wards from riding horses indiscriminately around the state, or else the law wouldn’t be merciful if they are caught.
