The Police in Ogun state have confirmed the arrest of a 32-year-old known drug addict, Samson Sikiru for allegedly strangling his mother to death.
The sad event happened on Sunday at the deceased’s residence around the Itanrin in Ijebu-Ode area of the state.
The suspect was said to have first been held down by neighbours after his younger brother, who works as a night guard, had returned home to the sorry sight and raised an alarm. He was subsequently handed over to the police for appropriate action.
Neighbours informed that the suspect had always been known to be a drug addict. They said he left home about five years ago but had decided to return recently.
While speaking about the incident, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Omotola Odutola, said the command is aware of the incident and the suspect is currently recieving treatment as a neuropsychiatric patient.
Shedding more light on the mental condition of the suspect, the PPRO said that Sikiru is sometimes tied down with ropes to prevent him from injuring himself or anyone.
“He had remained with his mother whom he visited during the Sallah celebrations, even though he is known for his retard tendency, but his condition was being managed to the best of the knowledge of his mother.
“It is not yet clear if there was any provocation by his mother, but, preliminary investigation revealed that earlier same day, he was tied up in the house, only for him to loose himself and descended on his mother and strangled her,” she narrated.
Odutola informed that telltales marks of violence were found on the body of the deceased mother – a proof that there was force or violence before the murder occurred.
“Samson Sikiru is still in the police custody, but, nothing much has been gotten from him, as he has not answered any coherent questions put across to him,” she said.
